That is an 'Item's' definition.
But it has got a very different meaning in our Indian films.
Where 'Item Number', is a song used with an actress as an 'item'.
'Item numbers ’ are a unique quirk of Indian cinema,
Which thrill audiences near or a far.
They have the power to grip the nation,
Make you forget corruption, recession or crippling inflation.
They are used in films for sex appeal,
Where our Roadsides Romeos in theatres whistle and squeal.
'Item numbers' started way back in the 50's and 60's,
And was created for the vamps especially.
Helen was the best 'Item Girl' of her time,
Who lit the screen on fire with her energy and dancing style.
From 'Mehbooba Mehbooba' to ' Yeh mera dil',
Her dance could surely make time stand still.
Then we had Bindu and Aruna Irani,
Who made the on screen vamps look gaudily sexy.
But now the list of 'Item Numbers' don't seem to end,
Looks like Bollywood has set a new trend.
From 'Humma humma' by Sonali Bendre, Urmila's 'Chamma Chamma' to Aishwarya's 'Kajraa re',
'Chaiya chaiya' by Malaika Arora and Shilpa Shetty in 'UP Bihar loot le'
Then Kareena in Billu singing ''Marjaani marjaani'.
I'm sure we'll never forget 'Sheila's Jawani' and 'Munni's badnaami'.
The long legged lass Deepika in the new 'Dum maaro dum'
But watching the lucky buffalo carrying Yana Gupta in 'Baabuji' will remove all your 'gum.'
Now there are 'Item boys ' in Bollywood also,
With Abhishek being the first in 2004.
For Rakht's 'One Love' he did a small cameo.
Shahrukh and Hrithik did the same in 'Krazzy 4'.
And Aamir in 'Delhi Belly' did an item number to disco.
That's it, I can write no more.
Oh yes , yet to come is 'Chikni Chameli' from Agneepath though,
Where Santa clause on watching it,
may say 'Ooh lala' instead of 'Ho ho Ho'.
